Industry insiders: TSMC obtains 3nm order commitment from several chip suppliers

Time:2022-08-21 Views:1920

On August 19, according to DIGITIMES, a source of IC design company disclosed that although competitor Samsung Electronics actively competed for orders for 3nm chips, TSMC continued to obtain orders for 3nm chips from suppliers such as apple and Intel.
The source said that Samsung is trying to expand its 3nm customer portfolio, but has not made significant progress. For TSMC‘s 3nm customers, transferring orders from TSMC may bring high costs.
TSMC‘s 3nm process will still adopt the structure of FinFET transistors, while Samsung‘s 3nm node will adopt GAA transistor architecture. Samsung even took the lead in turning the 3nm process technology to mass production.
However, the source pointed out that AMD, apple, Broadcom, Intel, MediaTek, NVIDIA and Qualcomm have all placed orders for 3nm chips with TSMC. However, Samsung‘s 3nm GAA process has not yet attracted orders from major chip suppliers.
According to the source, Qualcomm is considered as the most likely customer of Samsung‘s 3nm GAA process in view of the supplier diversification strategy of fabless suppliers and other considerations for its business with Samsung‘s mobile division.
