South Korea‘s Ministry of Science and Technology: The development level of 11 national key science and technology fields was overtaken by China for the first time

According to recent news from Korean media, the "2022 Annual Technology Level Assessment results" released by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information Communication (the Ministry of Science and Technology) on February 29, 2024 show that the development level of South Korea in 11 national key science and technology fields has been overtaken by China for the first time.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Science and Technology held the 57th operating committee meeting of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council on the same day and announced the above results. It is understood that the assessment of the level of scientific and technological development is implemented every two years, and the relevant papers and patents of 136 key technologies in 11 scientific and technological fields of the main five objects were analyzed, and 1306 experts were surveyed.
According to KBS news, the 11 national key science and technology areas include: construction/transportation, disaster/safety, aerospace/aviation/ocean, national defense, machinery/manufacturing, materials/nano, agriculture, forestry and fisheries/food, life/health care, energy/resources, environment/meteorology, information and communication technology (ICT) and other key science and technology and software.
The ministry announced the results at the 57th management committee meeting of the Korea National Science and Technology Advisory Council, which analyzed papers and patents related to 136 key technologies in 11 science and technology fields in five major countries and surveyed 1,306 experts.
According to the results, if the United States is considered as the country with the highest technology level, it is 100 percent, followed by the European Union (EU) at 94.7 percent, Japan at 86.4 percent, China at 82.6 percent, and Korea at 81.5 percent. In the 2020 technology assessment, South Korea and China were 80.1 percent and 80 percent, respectively, compared to the United States, but Korea was overtaken by China in two years.

Looking only at the 50 national strategic technologies, the technological development level of each country/region is the United States (100 percent), the European Union (92.3 percent), China (86.5 percent), Japan (85.2 percent), and South Korea (81.7 percent), widening the gap between Korea and China.
Compared to two years ago, Korea s technological level improved in nine of the 11 sectors, but fell in space, aviation and Marine, ICT and software sectors.
