Italian Semiconductor has released the STSPIN9 series of high current motor drive chips, with two products initially launched, targeting high-end industrial equipment, home appliances, and professional equipment.
The 4.5A STSPIN948 and 5.0A STSPIN958 integrate PWM control logic circuits and a 58V power stage, as well as system protection functions and two current detection operational amplifiers, suitable for driving DC brushless motors and bipolar stepper motors. Both chips support developers to flexibly configure and expand power levels, while streamlining bill of materials costs.
The STSPIN948 chip has two full bridge topologies that can be configured into different driving modes, allowing developers to choose from different configurations and flexibly drive multiple motors with different power ratings. STSPIN948 has multiple PWM current control modes to choose from, including fixed off time or adjustable current threshold, and supports five working modes. This 4.5A IC is packaged in a 7mm x 7mm VQFPN48 package.
STSPIN958 only has a full bridge topology and can be configured to drive two unidirectional motors and one bidirectional DC brushless motor. If the power output pins are connected in parallel, it can also drive a higher current unidirectional motor. This chip also provides fixed off time and adjustable current control mode selection, and can also be configured in double half bridge, single full bridge, and half bridge parallel configurations, supporting seven motor drive modes. This 5.0A STSPIN958 comes in a 5mm x 5mm VFQFPN32 package.
The wide working voltage range and flexible configuration make the STSPIN948 and STSPIN958 motor drivers suitable for various industrial applications, including factory automation systems, textile machines, industrial robots, household robots, stage lighting systems, ATM and cash dispensers, antenna controllers, vending machines, as well as most commonly used household appliances and industrial equipment.
Both driver chips allow designers to use an external resistor to set the voltage swing rate of the output transistor to 0.3V/ns, 0.6V/ns, 1.2V/ns, or 2V/ns, finding an ideal balance between power consumption and electromagnetic compatibility. The built-in dead time mechanism can effectively prevent breakdown, and the conduction resistance of each MOSFET is only 200m Ω, which can maximize energy efficiency. The propagation delay of 280ns ensures that the driver responds quickly to system commands.
Each chip has a complete set of protection functions, including overcurrent, overheating, and short circuit protection, as well as bus voltage low detection and undervoltage lockout (UVLO).
To help users develop applications using these two chips and shorten the project development cycle, Yifa Semiconductor also provides a simple and user-friendly evaluation board that is affordable. EVSPIN948 is equipped with the STSPIN948 chip, which can drive up to two motors. EVSPIN958 is equipped with the STSPIN958 chip, which can only drive one motor. Each evaluation board is designed as a motherboard expansion card, supporting most STM32 Nucl development boards and Arduino ® UNO R3 interface.
Both products have been mass-produced.
