Helium technology creates excellent AI performance
The new RA8 series MCU is deployed with Arm Helium ™ Technology, i.e. Arm‘s M-type vector extension unit. Compared to MCU based on Arm Cortex-M7 processor, this technology can improve the performance of implementing digital signal processors (DSP) and machine learning (ML) by four times. This performance improvement can enable customers to eliminate additional DSP for certain applications in their systems. Resa demonstrated the performance improvement brought by Helium technology and showcased its first chip at the Embedded World exhibition in 2023. As a leader in the field of edge and terminal AI, Ruisa brings various embedded AI and TinyML solutions based on Reality AI Tools to advanced applications in automotive, industrial, and commercial products, as well as a wide range of embedded processing and IoT product combinations. The new RA8 series MCU utilizes Helium to accelerate neural network processing, enabling edge and terminal devices to deploy natural language processing and achieve predictive maintenance applications in speech AI.
Roger Wendelken, Senior Vice President and Head of the MCU Business at Renesas stated: We are very proud to launch the new RA8 series equipped with a powerful Arm Cortex-M85 processor. As an outstanding global MCU supplier, our customers look forward to Reza providing ideal performance and functionality. We also rely on our assistance to grasp new trends and address technological challenges. The RA8 series sets new standards for MCU performance and functionality and will simplify the implementation of AI in a large number of new applications
Paul Williamson, Senior Vice President and general manager, IoT Line of Business, Arm stated that the emergence of AI has increased the demand for edge and terminal intelligence to serve new applications in different markets, including industrial automation, smart homes, and healthcare. Renesa‘s new MCU is built on ARM‘s highest performing and safest Cortex-M processor to date, specifically optimized for signal processing and ML workloads. For innovators who hope to seize the growing AI opportunities in the embedded and IoT fields while balancing security, it will change the rules of the game
Leading security features
In addition to excellent performance, the RA8 series MCU also achieves excellent security. The Cortex-M85 kernel includes Arm TrustZone ® Technology can achieve isolation and secure/non secure partitioning of memory, peripherals, and code. The RA8 series MCU introduces the state-of-the-art Ruisa Security IP (RSIP-E51A), providing cutting-edge encryption accelerators and supporting true secure boot. Other high-level security features include immutable storage for powerful hardware root of trust, eight line OSPI with instant decryption (DOTF) functionality, security authentication debugging, security factory programming, and tamper protection. By working in conjunction with Arm TrustZone, comprehensive and fully integrated security component functionality can be achieved. The Armv8.1-M architecture introduces pointer validation and branch target recognition (PACBTI) security extensions, which can alleviate software attacks against memory security violations and memory corruption. The RA8 series has also passed PSA certification level 2+Safety Element (SE), NIST CAVP, and FIPS 140-3 certification.
Low power consumption characteristics
The RA8 series products integrate new low-power features and multiple low-power modes, enhancing energy efficiency while achieving industry excellence in performance. The combination of low-power mode, independent power domain, lower voltage range, fast wake-up time, and lower typical working and standby currents reduces the overall power consumption of the system, enabling customers to meet regulatory requirements. The new Arm Cortex-M85 kernel can also perform various DSP/ML tasks at lower power consumption.
RA8M1 product group is now available
Ruisa has started mass shipping the first batch of RA8 series products - the RA8M1 product group. The RA8M1 product group MCU, as a universal device, can meet various computationally intensive applications in the fields of industrial automation, home appliances, smart homes, consumer electronics, building/home automation, healthcare, and AI, such as fingerprint scanners, thermostats, PLCs, smart meters, and home hubs.
