STC introduced LIN alternator voltage regulator conforming to VDA standard to improve the performance and flexibility of 12V automotive electrical system
STC introduced L9918 vehicle gauge alternator voltage regulator to ensure the stability of 12V automobile electrical system with stronger functions.
The voltage regulator is equipped with a MOSFET and a freewheeling diode. The MOSFET provides the excitation current of the alternator. When the excitation is turned off, the freewheeling diode is responsible for providing the rotor current. The closed-loop operation of the generator has load response control (LRC) and loop LRC control. When the overall power demand of the vehicle changes constantly, the output voltage will remain stable.
The excitation MOSFET can deliver a maximum current of 13A to the coil, which is higher than the current processing capacity of the conventional voltage regulator, thus improving the response speed of the system to the fluctuation of power demand. In addition, because of the latest manufacturing process, the on resistance RDS (on) of the new MOSFET is very low, which can greatly reduce the dissipation power while improving energy efficiency.
With the on-chip nonvolatile memory (NVM), customers can set L9918 parameters, including voltage set points, alternator characteristics, etc. The voltage regulator can be used together with the alternator with up to nine pairs of poles. Compared with other voltage regulators, the design is more flexible and can handle various charging application scenarios.
The L9918 also integrates a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus interface, which allows easy connection to the automotive electrical/electronic infrastructure and uses an external electronic control unit (ECU) to control the voltage regulator. ECU command settings include target voltage, read status and diagnostic information.
The safety and failsafe functions of the L9918 include phase signal self start activation, which independently maintains the alternator voltage setpoint if the LIN bus is disconnected for any reason. When communication is restored, the voltage regulator returns control to the ECU. Other built-in safety functions include current limiting, overcurrent protection and thermal protection, as well as thermal compensation that automatically adjusts the target voltage as the system temperature changes.
L9918 conforms to VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie) LIN alternator voltage regulator specification, passes AEC-Q 100 automobile electronic standard certification, conforms to ISO26262 standard, reaches ASIL-B automobile safety integrity level, and can be used for functional safety system.
L9918 has been put into production and is providing samples for major customers worldwide. The product delivery is divided into two modes: die and PENTAWATT in-line TO220-5 packaging.
