The factory is scheduled to start construction in the first quarter of 2024 and start production in the fourth quarter. The initial plan is to produce 10000 commercial energy storage batteries annually, with a storage capacity of nearly 40GWh.
Following the signing of the energy storage super factory project in Shanghai Lingang New Area in September, Tesla‘s Shanghai energy storage project has recently completed the land transfer signing, marking the official launch of this milestone project.
It is reported that Tesla‘s energy storage super factory project is located in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai, near its Shanghai super factory. It plans to produce ultra large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapacks) and supply them to the global market. The factory is scheduled to start construction in the first quarter of 2024 and start production in the fourth quarter. The initial plan is to produce 10000 commercial energy storage batteries annually, with a storage capacity of nearly 40GWh.
In early April of this year, Tesla announced the "Master Plan" during its Investment Day event. It is reported that in the future, Tesla will achieve 240 TWH of energy storage, 30 TW of renewable electricity, and a manufacturing investment of 10 trillion US dollars. As of the investment date, Tesla‘s investment in energy storage has reached a staggering $28 billion.
Since 2014, Tesla has invested $6.2 billion in Nevada to build a 5.4 million square foot super factory.
In January of this year, Tesla announced an additional investment of over $3.6 billion in the Nevada Superfactory, establishing two new factories: a 100GWh 4680 battery factory and its first high-yield Semi factory.
As of late January this year, Tesla‘s Nevada Superfactory has formed production capacity, including:
7.3 billion batteries (over 37 GWh per year)
    1.5 million battery packs
    3.6 million drive units
1 million energy modules (totaling over 14 GWh)
In addition, according to data, although the deployment rate of energy storage may fluctuate due to project progress time, Tesla‘s energy storage deployment in the second quarter increased by 222% year-on-year, reaching 3.7 GWh. According to financial reports, Tesla‘s first dedicated Megapack factory with a production capacity of 40 GWh in Lathrop, California has been successfully expanded, and there is still a lot of room for this factory to reach full capacity.
In addition to expanding battery and energy storage capacity, the company is also building cathode production and lithium refining capabilities in the United States.
In May of this year, Tesla broke ground on its internal lithium refinery located in the Greater Corpus Christi area of Texas, with an investment of over $1 billion. Tesla stated that this investment represents the company‘s active efforts to increase the supply of battery grade lithium hydroxide in North America.
It is reported that this project, covering over 1200 acres, will become the industrial deployment site for the first acid free lithium refining route. In the future, Tesla is expected to process other intermediate lithium materials here, including recycling batteries and manufacturing waste.
