TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor establish a joint venture to introduce advanced semiconductor manufacturing in Europe

Time:2023-08-11 Views:749
Recently, TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor announced plans to jointly invest in the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) located in Dresden, Germany, to provide advanced semiconductor manufacturing services. The establishment of ESMC represents an important step forward in the construction of a 300mm wafer factory to meet the rapidly growing production capacity demand in the automotive and industrial sectors. The final investment decision is still pending confirmation of government subsidy levels. The project is planned based on the framework of the Chip Act announced by the European Commission.
According to the plan, the factory is expected to use TSMC‘s 28/22 nanometer planar complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and 16/12 nanometer finned field effect transistor (FinFET) process technology to produce approximately 40000 300 mm (12 inch) wafers per month. By introducing advanced finned field-effect transistor technology, the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in Europe will be further strengthened and approximately 2000 high-tech jobs will be created. The goal of ESMC is to start building the factory in the second half of 2024 and plan to put it into production by the end of 2027.
The planned joint venture will be 70% owned by TSMC, with Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor each holding 10%. However, this composition still requires regulatory approval and other conditions to be met. The total investment of this project is expected to exceed 10 billion euros, including not only equity injection and borrowing, but also strong support from the European Union and the German government. The wafer factory will be operated by TSMC.
This investment in Dresden, Germany demonstrates TSMC‘s commitment to meeting customer strategic and technological needs. We are pleased to have the opportunity to deepen our long-term partnership with Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductor, "said Dr. Wei Zhejia, TSMC‘s president, Europe is a promising place for semiconductor innovation, especially in the automotive and industrial fields. We look forward to working with European talents to introduce these innovations into our advanced silicon technology
Dr. Stefan Harton, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bosch Group, stated: Semiconductor is not only one of the key factors for Bosch‘s success, but reliable supply is also crucial for the development of the global automotive industry. On the one hand, Bosch is continuously expanding our own manufacturing and production capabilities, and on the other hand, as an automotive supplier, Bosch is further collaborating to ensure the supply chain. Bosch is pleased to work with global innovation leaders like TSMC to strengthen Bosch Dress The semiconductor ecosystem around the Dun wafer factory
Our joint investment is an important milestone in strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in Europe. Through this, Dresden further consolidates its position as one of the world‘s most important semiconductor hubs. Infineon‘s largest front-end manufacturing base is located here, "said Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon Technology, Infineon will utilize this new production capacity to meet the growing demand of European customers, especially in the fields of automobiles and the Internet of Things. Advanced manufacturing capabilities will lay the foundation for the development of innovative technologies, products, and solutions to address global challenges such as low-carbon and digitalization
NXP Semiconductor has always been committed to strengthening innovation and supply chain resilience in the European region, "said Kurt Sievers, President and CEO of NXP Semiconductor, We appreciate the recognition of the key role of the semiconductor industry by the European Union, Germany, and the state of Saxony, as well as their practical commitment to promoting the European semiconductor ecosystem. The completion of this new and iconic semiconductor wafer factory will provide the necessary innovation and capacity for the automotive and industrial sectors that require various types of silicon products due to rapidly developing digitization and electrification
