Renesas Electronics launched the industry‘s first client clock driver CKD and the third generation RCD to support harsh DDR5 client and server DIMMs applications

Time:2023-06-30 Views:851
The new registered clock driver and client clock driver IC are the first to support DDR5 server and client DIMM modules with speeds up to 6400MT/s
Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solution provider, today announced the launch of the Client Clock Driver (CKD) and the third-generation DDR5 Registered Clock Driver (RCD) for emerging DDR5 DRAM servers and client systems. With these new driver ICs, Reza remains the only supplier to provide a complete DDR5 memory interface combination for dual inline memory modules (DIMMs), motherboards, and embedded applications.
The DDR5 CKD and DDR5 RCD ICs enable the next generation of DIMMs to achieve speeds of 7200MT/s and 6400MT/s, respectively, which is an improvement in transmission speed compared to the current 5600MT/s. CKD supports speeds up to 7200MT/s, making it the first product in the industry to connect to small DIMMs (SODIMMs), non buffered DIMMs (UDIMMs), high-performance gaming DIMMs, and soldered storage applications on client platforms. Renesa‘s 3rd generation DDR5 RCD is designed specifically for hosting DIMMs (RDIMMs).
Balaji Kanigicherla, The Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Advanced Mixed Signal and ASIC Solutions Division at Renesas states: As an outstanding storage interface product supplier in the industry, Reza continues to drive the storage ecosystem towards the forefront of performance and power consumption. Reza plays an indispensable role in the definition and implementation of DDR5 interface specifications and will continue to be an important partner for excellent SOC and DRAM manufacturers in the DIMM and system level fields
Dr. Dimitrios Ziakas, Vice President of Memory and IO Technologies at Intel stated: "Intel ® xeon ® The platform aims to provide support for storage intensive applications, such as predictive analysis based on deep learning and machine learning. As a new industry initiative, client clock drivers aim to further enhance client DIMMs. The 3rd generation RCD is an important milestone in the storage industry, helping to meet the bandwidth and capacity expansion needs of our data center customers. Ruisa and Intel have been working together in the industry to help ensure the standardization and implementation of client clock drivers and third-generation RCDs to meet market demand
CKD buffers clock signals between the host controller and DRAM, which is a new requirement for DDR5 DIMMs for client DIMMs and soldered storage applications running at speeds up to 7200MT/s. The all-new clock driver CKD supports I2C and I3C sideband access for asynchronous control, and provides internal control word access to configure device functions to adapt to different SODIMM and UDIMM configurations and soldered storage system applications.
The RCD driver buffers the command address (CA) bus, chip selection, and clock between the host controller and DRAM module, and also creates a BCOM bus to control LRDIMM data buffering. The new driver enhances the support of Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE); It increases the number of DFE phase converters from 4 to 6 to increase receiver margin, while I2C and I3C sideband bus support provides access control for directly connected registers.
Successful product combination using CKD and RCD drives
Renesar combines RCD and CKD drives with compatible products in other successful product portfolios, including DDR5 Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) and CKD Serial presence detect (SPD) hubs. RCD can also be paired with Reza‘s temperature sensors, SPD hubs, PMICs, and data buffers. Reza‘s "successful product portfolio" relies on mutually compatible and seamlessly collaborative products, while adopting a technologically validated system architecture to provide optimized low-risk design and accelerate product launch. Based on a wide product lineup, Reza has launched over 400 "successful product combinations" aimed at helping users accelerate design and market launch.
