The delivery period of some power semiconductors has been extended to 39~64 weeks! Car chips will still be in short supply

Time:2023-01-20 Views:1322
Introduction: The industry believes that the auto chip market is growing faster than other fields, including smart phones and data centers. Modern cars need more chips, which are more expensive than ever. Due to the strong demand, it is expected that the automobile chip will be one of the few segments with serious shortage in the chip industry this year.
A few days ago, according to British media reports, Dennis Laudick, vice president of Arm‘s auto go-to-market, said that automotive electronics supporting electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), in-car entertainment and other functions are growing faster than other departments such as smart phones and data centers.
It is reported that since 2020, ARM‘s car-related revenue has more than doubled. This is because modern cars need more chips, which is one of the few chip markets that will be short because of strong demand. In 2022, the total revenue of Arm increased by 35% to 2.7 billion pounds, and the revenue of Arm‘s auto department has increased by more than five times in the past four years.

Coincidentally, Infineon CEO Hanbeck said that the supply of non-cutting-edge products such as on-board semiconductors and power semiconductors for electrical control continued to fall short of demand. The balance between supply and demand of semiconductors will improve in the short term. However, in the long run, semiconductors are needed in the fields of electric vehicles and natural energy with increasing demand. For on-board semiconductors and power semiconductors, we are worried about the shortage of supply in the future.
On the other hand, Luca Sarica, head of strategic business development of the Italian and French semiconductor automotive and discrete device product department, said recently that the total value of semiconductor devices used in the software definition of electric vehicles is between 1500-2000 dollars, 3-4 times the total value of traditional automotive semiconductor vehicles (about 500 dollars). Luca Sarica said that the auto business will be the key support for Italy and France Semiconductor to achieve the revenue target of $20 billion in 2027. In addition, the silicon carbide production capacity of Italian and French semiconductors in 2022 is more than 2.5 times that of 2020, and the production capacity in 2025 will be increased by two times on the basis of 2022. At the same time, the company is actively promoting the transformation of silicon carbide wafer production line from 6 inches to 8 inches. It is expected that the 8-inch silicon carbide wafer will be mass produced in 2023.
According to the latest observation of DIGITIMES Research, the global semiconductor market size will exceed US $1 trillion in 2030, and the annual composite growth rate (CAGR) of sales from 2021 to 2030 will reach 7%. Among them, communication and computing are the main two categories of applications. However, the growth rate of sales of automotive and industrial-related semiconductors is higher than the average level, and future business opportunities are expected.
In addition, according to S&P Global Mobility, the average amount of semiconductors built in each vehicle will increase from $700 in 2020 to $1138 in 2028.
Previously, due to the shortage of chips, Honda, a major Japanese auto manufacturer, announced in December 2022 that a factory in Japan would continue to reduce production by 20% in the first ten days of January 2023.
The Nikkei Asia Review reported on the 4th that the survey conducted by the Distributors Association of Semiconductor&Components in December 2022 showed that the number of members claiming excess supply was 64 basis points higher than the number of those claiming shortage, 38 basis points higher than the survey conducted in September. However, automotive chips are the exception, and may be in shortage throughout 2023.
At a time when the demand for automotive electronics is rising, analysts believe that the power semiconductors used to control the current and the analog IC used to manage the power supply will remain short in 2023. According to the survey of American chip supplier Sourcengine, the delivery time of power semiconductors has been extended from 31 to 51 weeks at the end of May to 39 to 64 weeks by November 2022.
In addition to the above, it is worth mentioning that foreign media mentioned in the latest report that Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, two manufacturers that have been competing in the field of electronic products for a long time, will have fierce competition in the field of automotive electronics.

According to the news, LG Electronics and its subsidiaries, including LG Electronics VS business department, LG Innotek, etc., have been expanding personnel in the field of electric vehicles. Recently, they are recruiting employees for positions such as automotive software engineers, on-board radar circuit design, on-board network, driver assistance system camera, micro-control unit, etc., and some of them are recruiting masters and doctors from foreign universities and research institutions.
In addition to the recruitment of personnel, LG Electronics and its subsidiaries will also show their importance to the automotive electronics business in the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Exhibition 2023 (CES 2023). In addition to inviting executives from corporate customers, they also plan to open public booths this year to display the components of automatic driving and electric vehicles.
Samsung Electronics is also increasing its business related to electric vehicles. Samsung Electric, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has shifted its growth axis from parts of mobile devices to auto parts. In the organizational restructuring last year, they are also focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of the automotive electronics business.
Like LG Group, Samsung currently has many companies involved in automotive electronics related businesses, including Harman International, Samsung Display, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI and Samsung Motor.
